A man with a BMI of 27 and a large waist circumference faces significantly higher health risks than someone with the same BMI who carries weight in their legs and arms. For men who exercise regularly, BMI can be misleading. A man who is 180 cm tall and weighs 90 kg from muscle will have a BMI of 27.8, placing him in the overweight category despite being lean. This is a well documented limitation of BMI for active men. Waist to height ratio is a more reliable indicator. - Don't rely on BMI alone if you have a family history of heart disease. Get your blood lipids and blood pressure checked alongside.
