Physical labour burns significantly more calories than desk work. Construction workers, movers, and tradespeople can easily burn 3,000 to 4,000 calories per day depending on the intensity and duration of their work. The challenge for people in these jobs is not burning enough but eating enough of the right foods to support recovery and avoid injuries. Dehydration is a constant risk on active job sites, especially in warm weather. Even mild dehydration of 2 percent body weight reduces strength and endurance noticeably. Your activity level for TDEE calculation should be very active or extremely active, but be honest about rest days and weekends. If you train hard Monday through Friday but rest on weekends, your weekly average might be closer to very active than extremely active.
- Choose very active or extremely active for your activity multiplier. Construction work typically burns 500 to 800 calories more per day than desk work.
- Drink at least 3 litres of water on active workdays, more in hot weather. Dehydration of just 2 percent body weight noticeably reduces strength.
- Eat a high protein breakfast before starting work. Skipping breakfast when doing physical labour leads to faster fatigue and higher injury risk.
- Prioritise recovery nutrition after work. A meal with protein and carbohydrates within two hours of finishing helps your body repair and prepare for the next day.
